Meetup: Becky’s Release Walk

On the evening of February 14, the ResQgeek family, friends, and members of BCinDC met in Old Town Alexandria for a memorial release walk in honor of ResQgeek’s daughter, Becky (BookCrosser N-R-Jyzer). Equipped with heart balloons and bundled against fierce wind, we walked down to the tree planted in Becky’s honor in President’s Park, releasing books along the way.

In attendance were: ResQgeek & family (Sandy, PurplyPup, and their dog), dturnip1 & her husband, apples4hugs & his family, crrcookie & lilgrovers, KateKintail, mdm139 & family (Rock-Solid & T-train), and nat4lee. Across the world, many BookCrossers released books on the day as well.

Memorial Release for Becky

Last August, ResQgeek‘s daughter Becky (aka N-R-Jyzer) was struck and killed while riding her bicycle. We at BCinDC are organizing a memorial release on what would have been her 10th birthday: February 14, 2011. Always giving of love and hugs, Becky is remembered as embodying the true spirit of Valentine’s Day. The theme of our release in her honor is hugs, hearts, and Valentine’s day. Becky loved Winnie-the-Pooh, so we will be releasing those and other children’s books as well.

Date: February 14, 2011
Theme: Hugs, hearts, Valentine’s Day, Winnie-the-Pooh, children’s books
Release notes: Please include a link to the Becky’s Hugs facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Beckys-Hugs/147053868666518) in the JE for the release.

If you are in the area, BCinDC is holding a release walk in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, at 7:00pm that evening. We will meet at La Madeleine at 500 King St. (at the corner of King and Pitt), then walk down King Street and up N. Union St. to end at Becky’s tree in Founder’s Park. Please let us know if you will be joining us so we know to wait for you.

Memorial labels are available at the supply store.

We hope you will join us in remembering Becky.

Meetup: Cosi in Rosslyn

BCinDC’s first meetup of 2011 was on January 29, 2011 at Cosi in Rosslyn (Arlington, VA). There were lots of fun discussions, the reveal of the brand new Bally Blanket which all BookCrossers can enter to win, goldfish meeting goldfish, strangely expensive brownies, BookCrossers in matching shirts, and of course tons of books! Even the Ballycumber book made an appearance.

The lucky 13 BookCrossers in attendance were: authorauthor, crrcookie, FURBALL, Ixion, KateKintail, lilgrovers, LittleWhiteBird, mdm139, melydia, nat4lee, Rock-Solid, Squeakychu, and T-Train.

Blogging about the Convention

Blogger and author Laura Klotz has written a great piece about the upcoming BookCrossing Convention: http://good-idea-time.blogspot.com/2010/12/bc-in-dc-and-other-letters.html In her article, she discusses the practice of BookCrossing, the 2011 BookCrossing Convention in Washington, D.C., some of the things you can find on the BCinDC website, and a special project we’re working on in which she will be participating.

Have you written about the convention or know of an article that has been posted about it? Let us know and we’ll link to it!

Meetup: BCinDC Holiday Party

BCinDC held its annual holiday party at authorauthor’s house in Alexandria, VA on December 5. More delicious food than anyone could eat was on hand, lively conversation was had, and our traditional game was played. We had a box literally overflowing with books we had all brought that were wrapped and had the first lines taped to the front. Mdm139 read out the lines and the first person to speak up got to open that book. We had a book buffet as well, so any opened books that had already been read or didn’t interest the opener ended up there. As always it was lots of fun. The word “mistakes” kept popping up in first lines and sometimes we thought we knew what book it was, only to find out it was something completely different. The Shadow of the Wind‘s first line about the Cemetery of Forgotten Books made one of our members immediately think of the Book Thing!

BookCrossers in attendance were: authorauthor, FURBALL, Ixion, KateKintail,mdm139, nat4lee, ResQgeek, Rock-Solid, SqueakyChu, T-Train, and tiatia.
